On April 13, 2023, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Luxor Workspaces LLC announced a recall (Recall number: 23-177) of nearly 85,000 Luxor Workspaces audiovisual Carts. Roughly 84,700 units were sold in the US, and an additional 1,650 were sold in Canada.

These carts are often used to transport audio and video equipment in schools, daycare facilities, worship spaces, and other places. In instances when these carts are loaded with this equipment, particularly Cathode-ray tube televisions (CRT TVs), they pose a serve personal injury risk, as they can tip over.

Between 2006 and 2016, the tip-over hazard of the Luxor AV carts resulted in the death of three children and severe injuries of another. These incidents occurred when the now-recalled carts were “carrying a box shaped television (CRT TV)[which] tipped over and landed on them.”

According to the CPSC, these carts have been sold in the United States and Canada since the 1980s at various stores and online retailers such as Amazon, 123Stores, and Grainger. The carts retailed between $125 and $250.

The three recalled cart models are the WT42 “Tuffy” plastic cart, W42/AVJ42/SS-AVJ42 metal cart, and the LP-DUO/TPDUOEQ plastic cart. They were sold in a variety of colors and under several brands. According to Luxor Workspaces, the recalled carts are branded either “Luxor,” “Luxor H Wilson,” “H Wilson,” “Tuffy,” or “Line Leader.” Consumers should reference the complete list of affected items on the CSPC or Luxor Workspace websites to determine whether their cart is included in this recall.

CPSC notes, “consumers should not use the top shelf of the recalled A/V carts to transport anything over 25 pounds, including a CRT TV or any other heavy A/V equipment on each shelf. Consumers should disregard any instructional or marketing materials related to the suggested weight limits for the products.”

Both Luxor and the CPSC urge consumers to immediately stop using these recalled carts, especially around children, and urge them to contact Luxor to receive a free repair kit. Additionally, they strongly advise consumers to refrain from purchasing, donating, or reselling recalled carts.

Consumers can contact Luxor to receive their free kit via phone from 8:30 AM- 4:45 PM CT Monday-Friday (800-323-4656), by email(recall@luxorworkspaces.com), or by completing the form on their website. The repair kit provides consumers with metal ballast kits to be installed on the cart’s lower shelf to increase stability and weight. The CPSC also notes, “new warning labels cautioning consumers to place no more than 25 lbs. on each shelf will also be provided.”
