Walmart Recalls Ozark Trail 64 oz Water Bottles After Reports of Vision Loss Injuries

On July 10, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Walmart announced a major recall of Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles due to serious safety hazards that have already caused permanent injuries to consumers. According to the CPSC’s recall alert, the product’s lid can forcefully eject when opened—especially after storing carbonated or perishable beverages—posing significant impact and laceration hazards.

What’s Being Recalled and Why

The recalled product is the Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle, a popular model sold exclusively at Walmart stores and online since 2017. Priced at approximately $15, these large stainless-steel bottles were marketed for outdoor use and everyday hydration needs.

The specific hazard stems from the black screwcap lid, which can violently eject when pressure builds up inside the bottle. This can happen when consumers store carbonated beverages, juice, milk, or other perishable liquids that ferment or expand over time. Upon opening, the internal pressure may cause the cap to shoot off with enough force to cause serious injuries.

Injuries Reported: Two Cases of Permanent Vision Loss

Walmart has acknowledged receiving three reports of consumers being struck in the face by the bottle’s lid during normal use. In two of these cases, victims suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye.

This kind of injury is not only physically traumatic but can also have lifelong implications for victims, including:

  • Loss of independence
  • Inability to return to work or school
  • Ongoing medical expenses for vision rehabilitation
  • Psychological trauma and decreased quality of life

Recall Remedy and Consumer Action

The recall affects approximately 850,000 units of the Ozark Trail 64 oz bottle sold since 2017. These bottles were manufactured in China and imported by Olympia Tools International Inc. in partnership with Walmart Inc.

Model Details:

  • Model Number: 83-662 (appears only on packaging)
  • Color & Design: Silver bottle with black screwcap and embedded Ozark Trail logo
  • Size: 4.41 x 4.41 x 11.5 inches

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bottle and bring it to any Walmart location for a full refund. Additional information is available by contacting Walmart toll-free at 800-925-6278 or visiting www.walmart.com/help or Walmart’s Recall Page.

A Pattern of Dangerous Everyday Products

The Ozark Trail bottle recall is yet another alarming reminder that even basic household or outdoor-use products can pose serious dangers when improperly designed or manufactured. This recall is part of an increasing number of defective product cases we’re tracking—ranging from baby products and high chairs to camping gear, kitchenware, and medical devices.

What Makes This Case Legally Significant

Product manufacturers and retailers have a legal obligation to ensure their products are safe for reasonable use. When they fail, and someone is hurt, the victim may have grounds for a product liability lawsuit. These cases can be based on:

  • Design defects – the bottle should not allow pressure to build dangerously inside
  • Manufacturing defects – poor materials or assembly that compromise safety
  • Failure to warn – no visible warnings about unsafe use with carbonated or perishable beverages

In this case, Walmart and Olympia Tools may be held liable if they failed to sufficiently test the bottle under real-world use scenarios or failed to include adequate consumer warnings on the packaging.
