Trek Recalls Electric Bicycles Due to Fall and Crash Hazard: CPSC Safety Alert for Riders
At KBD Attorneys, our mission is to keep consumers informed about dangerous products and potential hazards in the marketplace. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced a recall of about 700 Trek-branded electric bicycles after determining a defect that can cause a fall or crash hazard for riders.
This recall highlights a serious safety concern — and represents another instance where Trek has had to pull bicycles from the market because of dangerous defects.
CPSC Recall Details: Defective Trek Electric Bicycles and Chainring Bolt Failure
On December 11, 2025, the CPSC issued a notice that certain Model Year 2026 Trek electric bicycles — including the Domane+ ALR 5, Domane+ ALR 6 AXS, Checkpoint+ SL 6, and Checkpoint+ SL 7 — have bolts on the chainring that may not be tightened to specification.
Because of this issue:
-
The chainring can separate from the bicycle while riding.
-
This sudden separation can cause the rider to lose control and fall — a fall or crash hazard that puts users at risk of serious injury.
The recall covers bikes sold nationwide at Trek authorized retailers and online from July 2025 through September 2025, typically priced between $5,000 and $8,000.
Consumers who own one of these bicycles are advised to stop using them immediately and contact an authorized Trek dealer to schedule a free repair. Dealers will tighten the chainring bolts to the correct specification. As an incentive for compliance, Trek is offering a $20 in-store credit toward Trek, Electra, or Bontrager merchandise for those who bring in an affected bike — valid through December 31, 2026.
According to the CPSC notice, Trek has received three reports of the chainring coming loose, but no injuries have been reported so far.
Trek’s Recall History: Prior Bicycle Defects and Safety Concerns
This recall adds to a history of bicycle recalls involving Trek products. Notably, in 2025 more than 68,000 Trek and Electra-branded bicycles with faulty coaster brakes were recalled due to a crash hazard when the brakes could fail to engage properly.
Earlier recalls have included models with other defects — including brake failures and structural issues — reminding owners that even highly reputable brands can produce bicycles with design or manufacturing flaws that jeopardize rider safety.
Why This Trek Electric Bicycle Recall Matters: Crash and Fall Injury Risks
Electric bicycles, in particular, can pose greater risk because they typically travel at higher speeds than traditional bicycles. When a critical component like a chainring suddenly fails, riders may be thrown from the bike with little warning.
Even if injuries have not yet been reported in this recall, the hazard remains real. Loose components on any bicycle can quickly lead to control loss — especially on busy streets, steep hills, or unpredictable surfaces.
How Defective Electric Bicycles Can Cause Serious Crash Injuries
Falls and crashes from bicycle defects can lead to significant injuries — including:
-
Fractures and broken bones
-
Head and spinal injuries
-
Soft tissue injuries (sprains, tears)
-
Long-term disability
