Recovering After a Brain Injury – New Treatments May be on the Way
KBA Attorneys litigate cases where people suffered a brain injury. This form of catastrophic injury can arise from motor vehicle collisions such as trucking collisions, nursing home falls, product liability defects, medical malpractice, electric shock, and other causes.
Falls in nursing homes appear to be on the rise. The consequences are significant, but preventable. Recovering from a brain injury is arduous and can be expensive, measured in monetary costs of care, and impact on the individual and support network.
Recovering from a brain injury can take months if not years
Having served clients suffering from a brain injury, we’re familiar with how long it can take to recover from brain injuries. Each one is different, and people respond differently in each case. Some take weeks, others take years and never fully recover.
Physical therapy, cognitive therapy, and other modalities are often part of the treatment plan. Some doctors prescribe medication.
The science concerning brain injury recovery continues to evolve
We are still learning about our bodies’ most important organ. A recent study explored mechanisms for how our brain recovers. As report here, a team “discovered a novel protective response by which the brain naturally repairs itself after traumatic brain injury.”
Their research suggests the brain protects and heals itself after a brain injury. Put simply, the brain “vacuums up” damaged cell parts (mitochondria (the cell’s powerhouses as you may recall from biol class). A specific protein is involved in this process. The authors concluded, “These data demonstrated that p17/C18-ceramide trafficking is an endogenous neuroprotective mitochondrial stress response following rlmTBI, thus suggesting a novel prospective strategy to interrupt the CTE consequences of concussive TBI.”
This may lead to new treatments, which is very exciting.
Fighting for justice includes knowing and pursuing available treatments
We watch the science because it impacts our clients. When we handle serious injury cases like brain injuries, we work with medical and scientific experts. We try to understand how the injury will impact our clients’ lives long term. Plaintiffs can assert claims for future medical care, so it is important to know what treatments are available to obtain resources to cover the costs, and emotional burdens involved with treatment.
KBA Attorneys have litigated these cases for many years. We have achieved significant results for clients. Each case is different and our past record is no assurance that we will be successful in reaching a favorable result in any future case.
