Problems with Cartiva Toe Implants Continue
If you’re researching Cartiva toe implants, you’re likely concerned about their performance and potential issues. Cartiva implants are meant to treat arthritis in the big toe. It offers a less invasive option compared to traditional fusion surgery. However, there have been growing concerns regarding their effectiveness and long-term outcomes.
What Are the Problems With the Cartiva Implant?
The implant does not remain in place. It sinks into the bone. It subsides. The bone around it fails and it moves. It does not provide enough “cushion” to accomplish its goals. We believe there are several problems with the Cartiva Toe Implant.
How Long does a Cartiva Implant Last?
We have seen product literature suggest it takes a year to accomplish its goals. We do not recall seeing anything limiting the amount of time it could last, an expiration date or shelf life. In our experience, it has lasted a couple years.
What are Common Cartiva Implant Failure Symptoms
The most frequently reported problems with Cartiva implants revolve around pain, limited mobility, and the failure of the implant over time. Some of the primary issues include:
- Persistent or Increased Pain (Many patients report that the pain either doesn’t improve or worsens after the surgery. This pain may be due to implant loosening, bone deterioration, or improper placement)
- Loss of Joint Motion (One of Cartiva’s selling points is that it allows for continued movement in the joint. However, several patients have noted that they experience limited range of motion or joint stiffness post-surgery, defeating one of the implant’s key advantages)
- Implant Loosening or Displacement (Over time, some patients find that the implant becomes loose or shifts, leading to further complications. In some cases, revision surgery is required to correct the problem, which can be both painful and costly)
- Long-Term Durability (While Cartiva implants are relatively new, early studies and patient reports suggest that their long-term success rates may not be as high as initially promised. Some people find that the implant fails to last, leading to early deterioration and the need for additional surgeries)
