KBA is working with another law firm as we often do on an exciting litigation. We recently filed a new lawsuit concerning Beovu. The product liability cases are against Novartis. More specifically, this is a pharmaceutical case concerning an injected biological drug that is used to treat visions issues, but is alleged to cause them.

Beovu

The drug, Beovu, “is a biological drug that is used to treat two chronic eye conditions.” The first is “neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and it is a leading cause of vision loss in people 50 years of age and over.” The second condition doctors treat with Beovu is “diabetic macular edema (DME). It is a complication of diabetes and another leading cause of vision loss.

Beovu is Alleged to Cause Retinal Vasculitis

A group of retina specialists, e American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), identified potential problems in 2020. As one doctor explained, “In the letter addressed to its members, the ASRS noted possible side effects not previously observed in clinical trial data. 14 cases of an unusual type of retinal vasculitis (inflammation) following injection of Beovu have been reported since the drug gained FDA approval.  In 11 of these patients, severe vision loss was sustained.” This injury is essentially inflammation of the retinal vessels, and it can cause vision loss.

Beovu is Alleged to Cause Retinal Artery Occlusion

Another potential serious complication associated with Beovu is retinal artery occlusion. This injury is basically blockage of the retinal artery, which brings oxygen rich blood to the retina. This can result in vision loss.

KBA is Here to Help with Beovu Claims

The attorneys at KBA often work with other law firms to bring lawsuits against large companies in complex cases. We recently filed a lawsuit against Novartis concerning Beovu. The Defendant, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, is a subsidiary of Novartis AG.

The FDA accepted Novartis’ premarket submission to sell the drug in 2019. The FDA, the U.S. Agency charged with protecting the public by regulating drugs, medical devices, biologics, and other products pre and post market, set forth a risk management assessment at that time. The lawsuit concerns injuries of retinal vasculitis, retinal vascular occlusion, and other acute eye injuries associated with the administration of Beovu.
