Walmart Recall Update: Risk of Deadly Sepsis from DermaRite Products Sold at Sam’s Club

September 2025 – Consumer Safety Alert

DermaRite Industries has once again expanded its voluntary nationwide recall of numerous personal care and hygiene products after tests revealed potential contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) bacteria. According to Walmart, some of the recalled items were distributed through select Sam’s Club locations in 14 states, raising new concerns for consumers who may have unknowingly purchased dangerous products.

This is the second major DermaRite recall in recent weeks, following the company’s earlier announcement in August that antiseptic products such as DermaKleen and PeriGiene were contaminated. Our firm, KBD Attorneys, previously covered that recall in detail, underscoring the risks of bacterial contamination in products that come into direct contact with vulnerable populations.

For more on the recall information read here.

Why This Recall Matters

The Burkholderia cepacia complex is a group of bacteria commonly found in soil and water. While it often poses little risk to healthy individuals, it can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections in certain groups, including:

  • People with weakened immune systems

  • Individuals with chronic lung diseases (such as cystic fibrosis or COPD)

  • Patients with open wounds or broken skin

Infections from contaminated products may range from localized skin irritation to bloodstream infections. The most severe cases can progress to sepsis, a life-threatening systemic infection requiring hospitalization and intensive care.

Even otherwise healthy consumers may be at risk if they use contaminated lotions, creams, or cleansers on broken or irritated skin.

Timeline of the Recall

  • July 16, 2025 – DermaRite initiates a voluntary recall of several product lines.

  • August 8, 2025 – Expansion includes multiple antiseptic products, as covered in our earlier KBD blog.

  • August 27, 2025 – The recall is broadened again to cover a wide list of skincare and hygiene items.

  • September 8, 2025 – Walmart confirms that Sam’s Club stores in 14 states received some of the affected products and releases its own recall distribution list.

This timeline shows how the scope of the problem has grown significantly, with the most recent update bringing the risk directly to Sam’s Club customers across the country.

Products Included in the Expanded Recall

The most recent expansion covers a wide range of DermaRite products, including but not limited to:

  • 4-N-1 No Rinse Wash Cream

  • DermaCerin

  • DermaFungal

  • DermaKleen

  • DermaMed

  • DermaSarra

  • Gel Rite Hand Sanitizer

  • Hand E Foam

  • KleenFoam

  • Lantiseptic

  • PeriGiene

  • PeriGuard

  • Renew Dimethicone & Renew Periprotect

  • Renew Skin Repair

  • UltraSure Antiperspirant/Deodorant

According to the FDA, these products were distributed nationwide and in Puerto Rico, making the scope of potential consumer exposure significant.

What Consumers Should Do

If you purchased any of these items—particularly from a Sam’s Club store—it is critical to take immediate action:

  1. Stop using the product immediately.

  2. Check the lot number against the FDA’s official recall list and Walmart’s Sam’s Club distribution notice.

  3. Dispose of affected products safely, following FDA guidance and local disposal rules.

  4. Monitor for signs of infection, including redness, swelling, fever, or pain.

  5. Contact your healthcare provider if you suspect exposure or infection.

The FDA also urges consumers to report any adverse events through its MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program to help track potential harm from contaminated products.

Connection to Earlier DermaRite Recall

This latest development builds on the August 2025 recall we covered in our previous blog, “FDA Recall Alert: DermaRite Antiseptic Products Contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia.” At that time, the recall focused primarily on antiseptic cleansers and soaps.

With the new expansion, however, an even broader set of daily-use products has been implicated—from lotions to deodorants to hand sanitizers—expanding the risk of contamination far beyond medical or hospital settings.

This reinforces the concern that contaminated personal care items can enter ordinary households through trusted retailers like Walmart and Sam’s Club, exposing families to risks they may not anticipate from basic hygiene products.

Legal and Consumer Safety Implications

While DermaRite has stated that it has not yet received reports of adverse events, the potential for serious illness—particularly in immunocompromised individuals—cannot be understated.

From a consumer safety standpoint, this recall highlights three major issues:

  • Testing and quality control failures in the manufacturing of personal care products.

  • The speed of recall communication, which directly affects how quickly families and healthcare providers can take action.

  • The broader legal liability of companies distributing potentially contaminated goods through nationwide retailers.

For families affected by infection linked to contaminated products, legal remedies may be available under product liability law, particularly if negligence in manufacturing or distribution can be demonstrated.
