VC Group Recalls Power Banks After 19 Fires and 10 Injuries

Portable power banks are supposed to be convenient. They’re meant to keep your devices charged on the go—especially phones and wireless earphones. But some power banks do more harm than good.

On March 20, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a major safety recall. The reason for the VC Group MagSafe Wireless Power Pack Portable Power Banks recall was because of  fire and burn hazards.

The problem? The lithium-ion batteries inside these power banks can overheat and catch fire.

This is not a minor issue. Nineteen incidents have already been reported. Ten people have suffered burn injuries.

As attorneys who help burn victims across the country, KBD Attorneys is sharing this update to raise awareness. If you or someone you know owns one of these power banks, stop using it immediately.

Read on for details about the recall and what your rights are if you’ve been hurt by a defective product—especially one sold on Amazon or by another online retailer.

What Is the Product Recall?

The recall involves about 89,500 VC Group portable power banks. These are 5,000 mAh wireless chargers that attach to the back of MagSafe-compatible phones and earphones. The name for them on the market is a “MagSafe Wireless Power Packs.”

You can identify the power banks by the following:

  • The brand “Velvet Caviar” engraved on the front plate.

  • Model number ZHX-PB21 printed on the bottom.

  • PO numbers from PO-PP001 to PO-PP010 are printed on the back.

  • Power banks without any PO number are also recalled.

These devices were sold for about $65 from November 2022 to October 2024.

You could buy them on velvetcaviar.com and Amazon.com.

The Reason For the Recall?

The issue is with the lithium-ion battery inside the device.

Lithium-ion batteries are known to be volatile when damaged, overheated, or poorly manufactured. In this case, the batteries can overheat, catch fire, and cause burn injuries.

There have already been 19 reports of these power banks overheating or catching fire. In 10 of those cases, consumers were burned.

Some of these burns may have been minor, but the reality is that burn injuries can be devastating. In other cases, these kinds of fires have even led to house fires or injuries to children.

What Should Consumers Do?

If you own one of these recalled power banks, here’s what you should do right away:

  1. Stop using the product immediately.

  2. Write “RECALLED” on it with a permanent marker.

  3. Take photos of the marked device.

  4. Upload those photos to the company website to request a free replacement:

Do NOT throw the battery in the trash. And do not drop it off in regular battery recycling bins.

Instead, dispose of it safely through your city or county’s hazardous waste recycling center.

Burn Injuries Can Be Life-Changing

At KBD Attorneys, we represent victims of burn injuries across the United States. We know how serious these injuries can be. Even so-called “minor” burns can leave permanent scars. More severe burns often require:

  • Painful skin grafts

  • Surgery

  • Long-term therapy

  • Emotional trauma support

Some people lose their ability to work or care for themselves after a serious burn. Others suffer from lifelong disfigurement.

If your injuries were caused by a defective product, you may have a legal claim. That includes fires caused by unsafe lithium-ion batteries—like the ones in these power banks.

Who Is Responsible? What If It Was Sold on Amazon?

These power banks were sold online, mostly through velvetcaviar.com and Amazon. This matters because many dangerous products come from third-party sellers on Amazon.

In many cases, these sellers are based overseas—many in China—and they ship directly to U.S. consumers.

This makes it harder for injured consumers to hold the manufacturers accountable. But not impossible.

At KBD Attorneys, we’ve taken on and continue to do research on Amazon and other big-name retailers and platforms when dangerous products have caused injuries.

That includes:

  • Fires from lithium-ion batteries

  • Exploding electronics

  • Faulty chargers and power strips

  • Dangerous toys and baby products

If you were hurt by a product sold on Amazon, we may be able to help—even if the manufacturer was based overseas.
