What Are Symptoms of a Head Injury?
A head injury can cause a range of symptoms and outcomes for children, depending on the type and severity of the injury:
- Brain damage
Children with severe brain injuries may experience long-term or short-term changes in behavior or personality, and may lose some function in their vision, hearing, speech, taste, or muscles. A child may lose a step physically, be less reactive in sports or play.
- Impairments
Even children with good outcomes may have significant impairments, such as weakness in their extremities, hearing or vision changes, speech or gait problems, or seizures. It can impact their memory and cognitive functioning. You may see a sudden drop in attention, focus, and academic performance.
- Emotional signs
Children with traumatic brain injuries may experience emotional signs, such as irritability, sadness, nervousness, or lack of interest in normal activities. Kids with a head injury start acting differently, more combatively, in contrast to be-head injury norms, and distinct from age-appropriate, normal developmental changes.
- Other symptoms
Children with head injuries may require lifelong medical and rehabilitative treatment, such as physical, occupational, or speech therapy.
