Stay Within Your Lane Under Maryland Law

Maryland expects drivers to stay in one lane unless it’s safe to move. That sounds simple, but lane changes cause crashes on multi-lane roads. The statute spells out what a driver must do, which makes it useful in a claim from Glen Burnie.

What Section 21-309 Requires

Maryland Transportation Article section 21-309 applies on roadways with several distinctly marked lanes for vehicles. A driver must drive as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane. The driver may move out of that lane, or pull into one from a shoulder or bikeway, only after confirming the move is safe.

Center Lane Limits

On a three-lane, two-way road, a driver may not use the center lane except in three situations. The driver can pass a vehicle going the same direction when the lane is clear for a safe distance, prepare for a left turn, or follow a traffic control device that reserves the center lane for that direction. A driver who drifts into the center lane outside those limits has broken the rule.

Lane Signs and Lane Change Bans

Drivers must obey devices that direct specific traffic to a designated lane. They must also obey devices that prohibit changing lanes on a section of road. Trucks, truck tractors, trailers, and buses must follow devices that require them to travel in a certain lane.

Those rules matter when a large vehicle crosses into the wrong lane. A truck that ignored a lane sign adds a second question to the claim. The sign, the photographs, and the vehicle’s position all help answer it.

Two-Way Left Turn Lanes

Where traffic control devices create a two-way left turn lane, a vehicle may enter only to prepare for or make a left turn or a U-turn, and only when the lane is clear of an opposing movement. A driver must stay in that lane for the shortest practical distance before and after the turn, and left turns must be made from within the lane. A driver who uses the turn lane as a passing lane has broken these rules.

Evidence After a Lane Change Crash

Lane-change crashes can turn on competing accounts. One driver says the other drifted, and the other says the first moved over without looking. Physical evidence can settle the dispute, and a claim can draw on several items, including:

  • Photographs of the damage and the lane markings
  • The crash report and its number
  • Dash camera and traffic camera footage
  • Names of witnesses
  • Medical records for each injury

Walkers face their own risks near lanes. Learning about Maryland crosswalk laws shows how drivers owe a duty to people crossing. Lane changes near a crosswalk can be dangerous, especially when a stopped vehicle blocks the driver’s view.

Cyclists share lanes with vehicles too. Reading about Maryland bicycle laws explains the room a driver should leave. A driver who cuts across a bike lane violates a separate duty.

Collisions between two cars come down to statements and damage. Clients hurt in them can work with our Glen Burnie car accident lawyer team, which compares each statement with the pattern of damage. The pattern shows how the vehicles met.

Claims From Glen Burnie Crashes

Glen Burnie sits near several busy roads, and the lane rules apply to each of them. Our Glen Burnie personal injury lawyer team reviews the lane position of every vehicle. That review shows who left a lane and why.

A rider on a motorcycle can be hard to see when a car changes lanes. Our Glen Burnie motorcycle accident lawyer team handles claims for riders hurt that way, and photographs of the lane help. Skid marks and damage show where the vehicles met.

Large trucks need more room to move over. Clients hurt in those crashes can work with our Maryland truck accident lawyer team, which examines the carrier’s records and the driver’s training. The company’s policies may matter.
