Specialized E-Bikes Recalled Over Dangerous Fall Hazard: What Riders Need to Know

If you or someone in your family rides a Specialized Vado or Como electric bike, there’s a new recall you need to know about. Specialized Bicycle Components is recalling over 32,000 of their popular IGH e-bikes due to a serious safety issue that could cause riders to fall and get hurt.

As attorneys who represent individuals injured by unsafe products, KBD Attorneys is sharing this important safety alert to help protect riders and their families. Whether you ride for fun, fitness, or commuting, it’s essential to stay informed about defective products that can put your safety at risk.

What’s Being Recalled?

The recall, announced on March 27, 2025, involves Specialized Vado and Como IGH (Internal Gear Hub) electric bikes with chain or belt guards. These bikes are sold across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Riders can identify these recalled e-bikes by checking the model name and serial number printed on the white-and-black label located underneath the top tube of the bike.

Here are the model numbers included in the recall:

 Recalled Models:

  • COMO 3.0 IGH / 3.0 IGH UL

  • COMO 4.0 IGH / 4.0 IGH UL

  • COMO 5.0 IGH / 5.0 IGH UL

  • COMO SL 4.0 / SL 5.0

  • VADO 3.0 IGH / 3.0 IGH UL / 3.0 IGH ST / 3.0 IGH STEP THROUGH UL

  • VADO 5.0 IGH / 5.0 IGH ST / 5.0 IGH STEP THROUGH UL

These bikes were sold from March 2021 through November 2024, with prices ranging from $3,250 to $5,750.

What’s the Hazard?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the protective chain/belt guard doesn’t fully cover the belt drive, which creates a serious entrapment hazard. Riders’ loose clothing can get caught in the belt, causing them to lose control and fall.

That kind of malfunction can lead to:

  • Broken bones

  • Head injuries

  • Cuts, scrapes, or road rash

  • Serious trauma, especially in older adults or children

Even though no injuries have been reported yet, this is a high-risk defect that could easily cause serious accidents, especially for unsuspecting riders.

What Should You Do If You Own One?

If you own one of these e-bikes:

  1. Stop using it immediately.

  2. Contact your nearest Specialized retailer to schedule a free repair.

  3. Specialized will install an updated protective guard that fixes the safety issue at no cost.

  4. The company is also contacting all known purchasers directly.

If you need help finding a local repair center, visit specialized.com or call their customer service line.

Why This Matters

Electric bikes are more popular than ever, especially for parents, commuters, older adults, and anyone trying to stay active or reduce their carbon footprint. But as e-bikes become more powerful and complex, the risk of injury from defective parts also increases.

At KBD Attorneys, we believe companies have a responsibility to make sure the products they sell are safe—especially when it comes to something as critical as transportation.

When a product causes injury because it wasn’t designed or tested properly, that’s not just an accident—it can be a case of product liability, and the victims deserve answers and compensation.

What If You Were Injured on a Bike?

Even if you weren’t riding a recalled Specialized bike, bike accidents can still happen, and often it’s not your fault.

You may be able to file a legal claim if:

  • Your bike or e-bike was defective

  • You were hit by a car, truck, or other vehicle

  • A dangerous road or trail condition caused your fall

  • A rental company or tour group failed to maintain your bike

We’ve helped victims of all kinds of vehicle-related injuries, including:

  • Bike crashes

  • Pedestrian accidents

  • Motorcycle and scooter injuries

  • Car and truck wrecks

  • Trucking accidents involving 18-wheelers

Don’t assume you’re out of luck just because the other party drove away or you didn’t report it right away. Every situation is different, and we’re here to listen, investigate, and help you understand your rights.

Protecting Families, Parents, and Everyday Riders

We know that a lot of families trust brands like Specialized to keep them safe. Whether you’re riding with a child seat, commuting to work, or just enjoying a weekend ride, safety should never be compromised by faulty manufacturing.

At KBD Attorneys, we support families by:

  • Sharing important recall alerts like this one

  • Helping people injured by defective consumer products

  • Representing victims of vehicle accidents, falls, and negligence

  • Holding companies accountable when they put profits before safety

If you or a loved one was injured in any type of bike-related incident, even if you’re not sure if you have a case, reach out. The consultation is always free.

This Specialized recall is just one of many recent examples of products being sold that don’t meet federal safety standards—and parents, riders, and everyday consumers are the ones who suffer the consequences.
