RYOBI Hedge Trimmer Recall: 113,000 Units Recalled for Laceration Risk

At KBD Attorneys, we’re committed to holding companies accountable for dangerous and defective products. We monitor recalls from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other agencies so we can inform the public, protect consumers, and support those injured by unsafe products. One of the latest recalls involves a popular power tool that may be lurking in your garage or shed: the RYOBI 40V 24-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmer.

On June 12, 2025, the CPSC announced a recall of approximately 113,000 RYOBI hedge trimmers sold in the United States (plus 15,000 in Canada), citing a serious laceration hazard due to a malfunction in the tool’s safety controls. If you or someone you love uses this tool—or has been injured by it—read on for important details and to learn how KBD Attorneys can help.

The Hazard: Unexpected Blade Activation

According to the CPSC recall notice, the RYOBI trimmer’s blade can activate without both the safety and trigger controls being engaged simultaneously. In normal operation, a hedge trimmer should only operate when the user holds down both safety mechanisms—this dual-action requirement is a key feature designed to prevent accidental blade movement.

However, the defect in these recalled models causes the blade to activate when only one of the controls is pressed. This malfunction significantly increases the risk of serious cuts or lacerations, especially during handling or transport when a user may mistakenly believe the blade is off.

Reported Injuries: 16 Consumers Hurt, Some Seriously

So far, 27 incidents have been reported to the manufacturer, TTI Outdoor Power Equipment Inc., based in Anderson, South Carolina. Of these, 16 involved injuries, ranging from minor to severe lacerations. These are not just statistics—they represent real people whose lives were disrupted by a product that failed to operate safely.

This is precisely why product safety standards and recall systems exist—and why legal support is essential for those affected.

Recalled Models: Check Your Serial Number

The recall affects RYOBI 40V 24-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmers with the following model numbers:

  • RY40620VNM

  • RY40602VNM

  • RY40602BTLVNM

To determine whether your trimmer is affected, locate the data plate on the bottom of the trimmer. Affected units have serial numbers in the following ranges:

  • LT21091D180001 – LT22365D060025

  • RG23125N250001 – RG24252D101110

If your hedge trimmer falls within these ranges, stop using it immediately and go to www.ryobitools.com/recall to verify eligibility and arrange a free replacement. TTIOPE will provide a pre-paid return label, and no proof of purchase is required.

Where the Product Was Sold

The recalled trimmers were sold from March 2021 through January 2025 for $90 to $160 at:

  • Home Depot stores nationwide

  • Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores

  • Online at HomeDepot.com and DirectToolsOutlet.com

This wide distribution means thousands of households could be affected by this defective product, potentially putting families and bystanders at risk.

What This Recall Means for Consumers

When a product that’s supposed to make home maintenance easier ends up causing injury, the consequences can be life-changing. Medical bills, lost wages, permanent scars, and emotional distress are just a few of the burdens a defective tool can cause.

The recall alone does not erase liability. If you were injured by a recalled hedge trimmer—even before the recall was announced—you may have the right to file a product liability lawsuit. Companies like TTIOPE have a legal and ethical responsibility to design, manufacture, and test their products to ensure they’re safe for use. When they fail to do so, they can and should be held accountable.
