When Regency Care of Arlington: A Closer Look at Nursing Home Neglect

Choosing a nursing home for a loved one is never easy. Families expect these facilities to provide compassionate, professional care, ensuring that residents are safe and well cared for. Unfortunately, reports of neglect and poor conditions at places like Regency Care of Arlington raise serious concerns about the treatment of elderly residents.

At KBA Attorneys, we fight for families whose loved ones have suffered due to nursing home neglect. If you suspect that your family member isn’t receiving proper care, it’s important to know the warning signs and what you can do to protect them.

Common Signs of Nursing Home Neglect

Neglect in nursing homes doesn’t always leave obvious scars, but there are clear warning signs that a facility is failing its residents:

Bedsores and Untreated Wounds: When staff fail to reposition residents regularly, painful bedsores can develop. Left untreated, these wounds can become infected and lead to serious medical complications. These painful wounds develop when a person remains in the same position for too long, causing pressure on the skin and underlying tissues. Bed sores typically form in areas where bones press against the skin. Common areas of bed sores include the lower back and tailbone, hips heels and ankles, shoulders and elbows.

Malnutrition or Dehydration: Proper nutrition and hydration are essential for maintaining a resident’s health. However, many nursing homes fail to provide adequate food and water. This is either due to understaffing, neglect, or poor facility management. When residents are not properly fed or hydrated, their bodies begin to weaken. This can make them more vulnerable to infections, falls, cognitive decline, and even death.

Poor Hygiene and Unclean Living Conditions: A clean and sanitary environment is essential for the health, dignity, and overall well-being of nursing home residents. When a facility fails to maintain cleanliness, it’s often a sign of deeper systemic issues. Some of these issues include understaffing, neglect, or lack of proper management. If a nursing home is not properly maintained, you might notice. Look out for dirty beds and soiled linens, soiled or unchanged clothing, foul-smelling rooms and common areas, as well as bathrooms and dining areas in poor condition. Serious health risks that can result in living in these conditions. Conditions range from higher risk of infections to aggravation of existing medical conditions, as well as emotional and psychological harm for all residents.

What Families Should Do If They Suspect Neglect

If you believe your loved one is being neglected, taking action quickly can help prevent further harm.

Document the Evidence: If you suspect that your loved one is suffering from nursing home neglect, gathering evidence is one of the most powerful steps you can take to protect them. Neglect and abuse are often difficult to prove, but taking photos, keeping records, and documenting changes can make a strong case against a negligent facility.

When documenting evidence look for any Visible Injuries  such as bruises, cuts, bedsores, infections or any other unexplained marks.  Taking pictures of living conditions is also important if you find that the home appears unclean, unsafe or unsanitary. If your loved one has had a dramatic drop in weight, dehydration or general weakness,  that is also something that should be documented. Other evidence can include changes in behavior or new and unexplained medical issues that arise such as medication errors, delayed medical care etc.

Speak with the Staff: Ask nurses and caregivers for explanations about any concerns. When their answers seem vague or dismissive, it may indicate deeper problems.

If your loved one has bruises, bedsores, or infections, you can ask the staff questions about how it happened, if there was an incident report, or what treatment was provided. If your loved one is losing weight at a rapid pace or seems weaker you can ask the staff about their eating habits, or who is monitoring it. You could also ask about any recent changes in their diet or medication.

Asking questions about any concerns regarding the well being of your loved one are important to ask, even if they are minor. You should have the confidence in knowing that they are happy, healthy and safe living in the home.

Escalate Concerns to Administrators: If issues aren’t resolved, report them to nursing home administrators or state oversight agencies. You have the right to demand better care for your loved one.
