Primark Recalls Water Balloon Pumps After Injury Reports
KBD Attorneys is committed to keeping families informed about dangerous consumer products—especially items marketed to children. Recently, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall that deserves attention. Primark has recalled its Water Balloon Pump (Product Code 5252801) after multiple reported injuries linked to the product rupturing under pressure.
What Triggered the Recall?
According to the CPSC, the water balloon pump can generate excessive pressure during use, causing it to rupture unexpectedly. This sudden rupture can create sharp edges or flying components that pose a risk of physical injury. At least two U.S. consumers reported hand and finger lacerations, and several more incidents have been reported internationally.
The pumps—sold in blue and pink, designed like a water bottle with a spray-style head—were available in Primark stores from March 2023 through July 2023. Approximately 3,170 units were sold in the United States.
Who Is at Risk?
Children and teens are the primary users of this product, which makes the recall particularly concerning. Water balloon accessories are commonly used during family gatherings, birthday parties, camp programs, and neighborhood play. A rupturing pump could easily injure a child’s hands or face, or injure an adult nearby.
Many families keep outdoor toys stored for long periods, so it’s very possible these pumps are still in garages, closets, or pool boxes without parents realizing they’ve been recalled.
What Consumers Should Do
If you purchased this water balloon pump:
-
Stop using it immediately.
-
Return it to any Primark store for a full refund — no receipt required.
-
If you cannot reach a store, contact Primark customer service for guidance on returning the product.
Never continue using a recalled product even if it “seems fine.” Defects like these often involve internal pressure issues that may not be visible.
Why Recalls Like This Matter
While a water balloon toy may appear harmless, any defective consumer product capable of causing injury can give rise to a product liability claim. Companies have a legal responsibility to ensure the items they sell are reasonably safe for their intended use. When a defect in design, manufacturing, or warnings causes harm, injured consumers have the right to seek compensation.
In cases like this recall, the reported injuries involve cuts and lacerations, which may lead to medical expenses, scarring, nerve damage, or lost time from work. Even minor injuries in children can have long-term consequences.
