Fatal I-95 Crash in Cumberland County Highlights Ongoing Dangers of Truck Collisions in North Carolina

A devastating crash on Interstate 95 near Fayetteville, North Carolina claimed at least one life and left another person seriously injured on Monday morning, underscoring the life-and-death risks faced by those who share the road with commercial trucks. (MSN)

According to investigators, the crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. at mile marker 53 in Cumberland County. A disabled dump truck was parked in the breakdown lane, with a service truck stopped nearby. Moments later, a semi-truck sideswiped both vehicles, striking a roadside mechanic and rear-ending the dump truck.

Tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The dump truck driver, who was trapped in the cab, was later rescued and taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with serious injuries.

The semi-truck driver has been charged with failure to maintain lanes and death by motor vehicle. Authorities say additional charges could follow as the investigation continues.

Trucking Dangers Along North Carolina’s I-95 Corridor

Interstate 95 is one of the busiest commercial routes in the eastern United States — and one of the deadliest for truck-related crashes. With heavy freight traffic, narrow shoulders, and frequent construction zones, even one moment of driver inattention can have catastrophic consequences.

This latest crash mirrors a troubling pattern across the state:

  • Fatigue and distraction among truck drivers lead to deadly lane departures.
  • Improperly parked or disabled vehicles on highway shoulders create hazards that are often invisible until it’s too late.
  • Delayed braking and massive truck weight turn minor mistakes into fatal collisions.

When a driver fails to maintain control or a company fails to enforce safety protocols, innocent workers, motorists, and families pay the price.

Who Can Be Held Responsible After a North Carolina Truck Accident?

Truck crashes are rarely simple — and determining fault requires thorough investigation. Depending on the facts, multiple parties could bear responsibility:

  • The truck driver, for negligence such as speeding, fatigue, or distraction.
  • The trucking company, for poor supervision, rushed schedules, or safety violations.
  • The vehicle maintenance contractor, if mechanical failure played a role.
  • The manufacturer or parts supplier, in cases involving brake or tire defects.
