Electric scooters have become a popular alternative to other methods of transportation, but with their rise in popularity also comes a rise in injuries.

Pennsylvania Woman Injured by Defective Electric Scooter

As an example of how escooters can hurt people, on or about Dec. 13, 2021, a Pennsylvania woman sustained serious injuries when the handlebars suddenly collapsed. This caused her to lose her balance, fall, and suffer injuries, including a trimalleolar fracture to her right ankle requiring surgical repair with metal plates and numerous screws. She was left with pain and suffering that endures to this day.

Scooter Injuries Are Common with Defects Causing Many Injuries

Scooter injuries are becoming increasingly common. According to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were more than 190,000 emergency room visits due to micro-mobility products from 2017 through 2020, with visits increasing 70 percent during that time period. This includes e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards. Most of the increase between 2017 and later is attributable to e-scooters which have grown in popularity as companies like Bird and Lime introduced rentable e-scooters into cities across the country.

Loose or detaching handlebars, batteries bursting into flames, flat tires and baseboards breaking in half are all commonly reported defects in recent years.  Although we are not investigating flat tires and baseboards, we are investigating potential cases concerning exploding batteries and handlebars that have failed. Potential clients must have suffered a serious injury, such as a brain injury, significant burns, or broken bones requiring medical intervention.

You May Be Eligible for Compensation After Sustaining a Scooter Injury

When a consumer or patient receives a defective product that causes injury or worse, he or she has the right to file a personal injury lawsuit. They may sue the manufacturer or seller of the defective item for putting profits above public safety by designing defective products or failing to warn users of their risks.
