Two Maryland boys remain hospitalized after an e-bike crash near Abingdon left both with serious, life-altering injuries. Family members describe a long recovery ahead, and the incident has put a spotlight on how dangerous these rides can be for young riders.

What Happened Near Laurel Bush

The crash happened Sunday, June 7, near the Laurel Bush area of Abingdon, according to Harford County emergency responders and family members. Both boys, Lucas Koehler and his friend Sam, were flown by helicopter to Johns Hopkins for treatment.

Koehler suffered severe facial injuries and is expected to need extensive plastic surgery to his face and jaw. Sam underwent surgery for injuries to his hand and jaw, along with a lacerated kidney and broken ribs.

A fundraiser organized to help the families cover medical costs, travel expenses, and missed work described the situation as one where “everything is still so unknown.” As of this writing, the campaign has raised more than $11,600 toward its goal.

Why E-Bike Injuries Tend to Be Severe

Emergency physicians nationwide have raised concerns about the type of trauma e-bikes cause in young riders. Unlike a fall from a traditional bicycle, e-bike collisions often produce injuries closer to what doctors see in car crashes, including internal injuries, fractures, and head trauma. Some doctors point to the higher speeds e-bikes reach, along with the added weight of the battery and motor, as reasons the impact can be so much greater than a standard bike fall.

A report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission found that more than 360,000 emergency department visits were tied to e-bikes, e-scooters, and hoverboards between 2017 and 2022, with children 14 and younger accounting for roughly 36 percent of those injuries.

Questions Families Should Ask After an E-Bike Accident

When a child is seriously hurt on an e-bike, the cause isn’t always obvious right away. Some factors worth examining include:

  • Whether the e-bike was mechanically sound before the ride
  • The rider’s speed and the type of e-bike involved (throttle versus pedal-assist)
  • Whether another vehicle, road hazard, or pedestrian was involved
  • Local and state regulations on e-bike use by minors

An e-bike crash involving a minor can raise questions that go beyond a typical bicycle accident. Product defects, negligent supervision, road conditions, or another driver’s actions may all play a role, and each carries a different path toward accountability.

Moving Forward After a Serious Injury

Recovery from injuries like the ones Koehler and Sam are facing takes time, and the financial toll often extends well past the hospital stay. Medical bills, travel to follow-up appointments, and lost time from work add up quickly for families already dealing with a frightening situation. A bicycle crash like this one can leave lasting physical and emotional effects long after the initial surgeries are done.

Anyone dealing with the aftermath of an e-bike accident in Bel Air or the surrounding Harford County area deserves a clear picture of their options.
