Harmful Effects of Scalds

If a burn is caused by something wet, like hot drinks, is called a scald. This type of burn can be dangerous, as it can destroy the tissues and cells that it comes in contact with. There are four categories of scalds, depending on the seriousness of the burns and lacerations. A deeper cut increases the risk of infection.

Superficial epidermal burn

  • This type of scald is the least harmful and affects only the outer layer of skin. With this type of minor burn, common side effects include redness, swelling and pain.

Superficial dermal burn

  • This type of scald is more dangerous than the superficial epidermal burn as is reaches the second layer of the skin. This can negatively affect a persons nerve endings, blood vessels and hair follicles.
  • The skin will turn a pale pink color. Blistering and pain are most likely to occur in the burned areas and could be signs of infection. To prevent infection use antibiotic ointment.

Deep dermal/partial-thickness burn

  • This type of scald is similar to a superficial dermal burn. It reaches both the first and second layer of the skin.
  • This damage will either result in extreme pain or will be completely painless. With a partial-thickness burn, the skin will turn red and blistering and swelling may occur in the burned areas of the body. If the dermal microvasculature gets destroyed, blood flow will stop in that area.

Full thickness burn

  • This type of scald is the most dangerous. Doctors classify this full thickness burn scald as a third degree burn, and it affects the epidermis, dermis, and subcutis layers of skin. A third degree burn requires medical attention immediately.
  • A damaging side effect with these types of burns may cause the skin to be leathery and burn away. This may cause the burnt tissue to turn black.
  • Risk of infection is extremely high in these types of scald burns. This can life threatening burn can cause harmful long term damage and and could require serious medical treatments. One example is skin grafting, which is used during the healing process.
