Ford Recalls Over 312,000 Vehicles Due to Brake Assist Failure Risks

Owners Urged to Act as Risk of Collision Increases

Ford Motor Company has issued a major recall affecting 312,120 vehicles in the 2025 model year, including its most popular trucks and SUVs. The affected models include the 2025 Ford F-150, Ranger, Bronco, Expedition, and the 2025 Lincoln Navigator. The reason? A serious brake assist problem that could significantly increase the risk of collisions — especially when relying on the vehicle’s driver-assistance systems.

As injury attorneys who monitor auto defect recalls, KBD Attorneys is sounding the alarm to keep families safe. If you or a loved one owns a 2025 Ford truck or SUV, it’s crucial to understand this defect and what steps you need to take.

What’s the Problem With the Brakes?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the official recall notice, the electronic brake booster module in the affected Ford vehicles may enter a faulted state during normal driving conditions. When this happens, the power brake assist system fails — leaving drivers with only unassisted braking.

What does that mean in real-world terms?

  • Longer stopping distances

  • Increased crash risk, especially in emergencies

  • Failure of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like automatic emergency braking

  • Warning lights for ABS and stability control may appear after the fault occurs

Ford estimates at least 1% of the 312,120 vehicles could suffer from this failure. That’s still over 3,000 vehicles potentially operating without proper braking performance on the road today.

Which Ford Vehicles Are Affected?

Here is the breakdown of impacted models from the recall:

  • 217,969 — 2025 Ford F-150

  • 20,552 — 2025 Ford Ranger

  • 39,913 — 2025 Ford Bronco

  • 26,582 — 2025 Ford Expedition

  • 7,104 — 2025 Lincoln Navigator

Given how many of these vehicles are used as daily drivers, family transport, and work trucks, the scope of this issue is alarming.

What Is Ford Doing to Fix It?

The good news is that Ford has issued a fix for the issue via a software update to the brake booster module. The update is designed to prevent the module from entering the faulted state, even when there are normal but infrequent voltage disturbances.

Ford plans to:

  • Begin notifying dealers on August 11, 2025

  • Start notifying customers directly by August 25, 2025

  • Offer an over-the-air (OTA) software update starting in August

  • Let customers schedule the update at Ford or Lincoln dealerships if they prefer

Consumers will be able to check whether their specific vehicle is affected starting August 25 by entering their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) into Ford’s recall lookup tool.

Why This Matters for Safety — And Liability

This isn’t just a mechanical inconvenience — it’s a potentially life-threatening defect.

If brake assist fails at the wrong moment — during a highway stop, in city traffic, or while relying on ADAS to slow the vehicle — the results could be catastrophic.

Drivers expect their vehicles to respond reliably in emergencies. And in today’s era of increasing automation, software failures like this raise serious questions about manufacturer responsibility.

Related Recall Coverage From KBD Attorneys

This isn’t the first recent Ford recall — and it’s certainly not the only automotive safety concern we’ve covered. At KBD, we track auto recalls that pose serious dangers to families, workers, and everyday drivers.

Ford Pickup Truck Recall

We recently reported on a related another Ford truck recall involving critical braking component issues and malfunctioning software in 2025 models. That recall impacted many of the same F-series trucks now affected by this brake assist defect. Together, these recalls show a troubling pattern of quality control lapses.

What Should Ford Owners Do Now?

If you own one of the vehicles listed in this recall, here’s what you should do immediately:

  1. Write down your VIN (usually located near the windshield or in the driver’s door frame).

  2. Check the Ford recall lookup at Ford.com after August 25.

  3. Contact your local Ford or Lincoln dealership to ask about the software update.

  4. Watch for warning lights such as ABS or stability control alerts while driving.

  5. If you believe your brakes are not responding properly, stop driving the vehicle immediately and contact the dealer or Ford customer support.

Injured in a Crash? You May Have a Case.

If your vehicle failed to brake as expected — or if you’ve been in a crash involving one of these recalled Fords — you may be entitled to compensation. Manufacturers have a legal duty to design and test vehicles that are safe for consumers. When they fail, and people are injured, legal action may be the only way to hold them accountable.
