$15 Million Verdict for Staffing Fraud: Pennsylvania Nursing Homes Found Guilty
$15 Million Verdict for Staffing Fraud: Pennsylvania Nursing Homes Found Guilty
Two Pennsylvania nursing homes have been ordered to pay over $15 million in fines after a federal jury found them guilty of Medicare and Medicaid fraud. The ruling, announced in May 2025, followed a lengthy investigation and trial exposing serious staffing misrepresentations that endangered residents and violated federal law.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice and reported by HealthExec, Brighton Rehabilitation and Wellness Center and Mt. Lebanon Rehabilitation and Wellness Center falsely inflated their staffing numbers. The fraudulent reports allowed them to appear compliant with minimum staffing requirements and continue receiving federal funds under Medicare and Medicaid programs.
Nursing Home Fraud: A Danger to Residents and an Abuse of Trust
At trial, evidence showed that the two facilities reported staff members who were either not on duty or not actively providing care. Despite these shortfalls, they continued to admit new residents, knowing full well they lacked adequate staffing to deliver safe and quality care.
This failure in basic duty led to devastating consequences, including preventable injuries and violent incidents among residents. Judge Colville, who presided over the case, emphasized the severity of the fraud, calling it a “tragic set of events” that endangered vulnerable residents and misused taxpayer funds.
The jury found the facilities guilty of 10 counts of fraud after a five-week trial. Brighton was fined $12.6 million, and Mt. Lebanon was ordered to pay $2.7 million. Both facilities are owned by Comprehensive Healthcare Management Services, a for-profit company operating long-term care centers.
Holding Negligent Nursing Homes Accountable
At KBD Attorneys, we believe the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of nursing home residents must always come first. Unfortunately, this case is not isolated. Across Pennsylvania and the country, many families face the devastating consequences of nursing home abuse and neglect.
Our Pennsylvania nursing home abuse lawyers have seen firsthand what happens when facilities put profits over people. Understaffing is one of the most common—and most dangerous—forms of neglect. It leads to:
- Missed medications
- Untreated bedsores
- Falls and fractures
- Poor hygiene and malnutrition
- Physical and emotional abuse
When nursing homes fail to maintain minimum staffing, they not only risk lives—they commit fraud if they lie about it to keep federal funding. KBD Attorneys is committed to exposing this kind of misconduct.
Your Rights: Protecting Loved Ones in Nursing Homes
This case is a wake-up call. Families trust nursing homes with the care of vulnerable loved ones. When that trust is broken, the consequences can be fatal.
